| | Behind My Camera: A WWII Story By Blake Young | With Veterans Day this week, I wanted to publicly thank all veterans—both living and those who have passed. | Many, if not all, of you have seen me present and trade daily. What you don't know is that directly behind my computer and camera hangs a special reminder: a shirt, or what's called a Navy blouse. | This blouse once belonged to a young man during World War II who probably weighed about 125 pounds at the time. I'll never be able to wear it, but it will likely be displayed in my office for the rest of my life. | This young man served in the Navy as a cook aboard a vessel. If you look closely at the patch, you'll see he was a Pharmacist's Mate—the title given to those who served as Hospital Corpsmen before the hospital corps officially existed. | He served honorably during World War II, returned home, and approximately 30 years after the war, became my maternal grandpa. | | Both of my grandpas served in World War II, and I treasure the heritage of knowing these good men served their country and their families. | My maternal grandpa's influence has been especially meaningful to me. I love that he was both a cook and involved in medical care during the war, and how his legacy echoed through the years. | After returning home, he ran a bakery to support his family, and many of us have developed our own baking skills as a result. I still have some of his original baking pans along with the Navy blouse. | His son—my uncle—spent his entire professional career as an air medic and paramedic. All of his children and grandchildren share a strong work ethic and devotion that I believe were passed down from him. | This reminder looks back at me every day I sit down in my office, and I hope I can also be of service to others and be an honorable man like my grandpas were. | Once again, thank you to all the veterans who have served faithfully and honorably. | Blake Young Senior Market Strategist, TheoTRADE |
