Today, I want to do something a little different and talk about the power of not giving up.
Like many people out there, I’ve failed multiple times in trading and in business. Heck, sometimes after a really hard blow, it even felt like I was failing at life.
At any point when things got difficult and my portfolio turned against me, I could have thrown my hands in the air and walked away from the market.
But had I done that, I wouldn’t have the financial independence that I do now. And I certainly wouldn’t own multiple homes or a boat that I fish in every weekend.
My point is that learning how to fail isn’t something you can get from a textbook. It’s not what you go to college for.
Rather, it’s a life experience you have to go through to appreciate and be made stronger by. But here’s the good thing…
There are steps you can start taking today that will help you prepare for the hard times.
For one, I recommend finding like-minded people — be it an individual mentor or a group — to give you words of encouragement and help you bounce back.
It always helps to get a second opinion on a big life or financial decision. And oftentimes, it takes someone outside of the box to help you see clearly when you find yourself in the thick of it.
Second, figure out what your backup plan is. Say to yourself, “If everything ended tomorrow, what would I do to change? What would I do to get back on my feet?”
Always, always, always have a Plan B. I cannot stress that enough.
Finally, don’t shut yourself off to new opportunities. While this last one sounds simple enough, it’s easy to get into a habit of only seeing the negative when you feel like the world, or your portfolio, is going against you.
But if you only ever look for the negative … then I promise you, that’s all you’re going to find.
Instead, keep yourself open to new friends, new income streams and even new life experiences that will push you outside of your comfort zone.
After all, at the end of the day, how you live your life will be reflected in how you trade and what gains you make.
And listen, if you want to quit … that’s your prerogative. But you aren’t going to get anywhere in life by running away from the difficult things.
It’s taken a series of failures for me to realize that in order to be successful, you can never give up on anything. So, keep being persistent.
At the end of the day, not only will you be proud of yourself for your accomplishments, but you’ll likely have more money in your pocket.
And you and your loved ones will be all the happier for it.
