Continuing in our series of “fun projects I do around the house,” today, I’m going to show you how I make the boxes I use to keep my bees. If you don’t know, I’m a part-time beekeeper too. But there’s one big benefit to beekeeping that might surprise you!

For those that don’t know, I keep bees on the farm in Knoxville.

You might assume I do it to collect and sell honey, but that’s not actually the case.

It was actually for agricultural problem-solving purposes.

We were getting lackluster pollination of our crops, so I started keeping bees to try to fix our production problems.

It worked!

They have almost tripled the fruit production since we started keeping them.

So I for one believe they deserve a good home!

I have a CNC that I built that cuts whole sheets of plywood. (For the nerdily inclined, CNC stands for computer numerical control. They’re controlled by a computer and give me more accuracy and precision than I could ever have by myself).

Back before plywood went up 1,000%, I was cutting my own bee boxes out of some water-resistant flooring.

Since the boxes spend their life outside in the weather, I went with the “lifetime” rated water-resistant flooring.

I put a little outdoor protective coating on it to try to help up the ante on water-resistance!

Regular old OSB (oriented strand board, aka plywood) is not rated for wet, so it would not last long in the weather.

But these boxes have stood the test of time.

I have plenty of boxes now. It was a nice way to make some custom bee homes quickly.

And now I don’t have to worry about soaring plywood costs because I took the time to get the good stuff!
