I know I spilled a lot of digital ink describing all the scary aspects of today’s world this year.
Its order is shifting. Though, I doubt the resulting order will end up looking new.
But no matter how rough things seem, keep this in mind – there will always be people working on big ideas. Engineers will continue advancing technology. Scientists will still try to make this world a better place. And as we roll into 2023, I want to point out three truly incredible advances I became aware of in just the last couple of weeks.
In fact, based on these breakthroughs, you could say that advanced AI running on a quantum computer powered by nearly limitless fusion energy just got a little more real. And that’s because of tangible advances in the fields of energy, information processing, and artificial intelligence.
In the field of energy, scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California recently announced a major nuclear fusion milestone by producing more energy from a fusion experiment than was put in.
Researchers shot lasers at a capsule containing a small amount of hydrogen to heat and compress the hydrogen fuel. The laser is so strong that it can heat the capsule to temperatures hotter than the center of the sun and compress it to more than 100 billion times the atmospheric pressure of Earth. Under these extreme conditions, the capsule begins to implode on itself, forcing the hydrogen atoms to fuse and release energy.
Very cool.
In the field of information processing, physicists discovered they could improve how quantum computers perform by shooting lasers at qubits (like bits, but quantum bits) in a Fibonacci sequence. Now, how far on the BS spectrum this falls I can’t verify. But, if true, I guess you can at least score two for lasers.
And for artificial intelligence, well…you just need to see it for yourself.

This very real, hands-on technology makes me think we are now honestly grappling with the emergence of a new form of intelligence on the planet. And this is the free version.
But even the free version is already doing homework, writing essays. Heck, it even wrote a children’s book in a week.
And I let it write a paragraph above. It lacks flair but, hey, there’s only one me.
