I’m not a great painter. As a still relatively new homeowner, there’s a lot I want to do in my house to make it more my own. And one of those things is to paint every room to cover the lifeless gray that the previous homeowners painted everything before selling. Obviously, I know that DIY projects are always cheaper than paying an expert… So with painting, I’ve told myself that I can handle it over time… when the mood strikes… There’s just one problem: I’m not a good painter. It doesn’t seem like it should be difficult. The skill doesn’t feel like it should elude me. Nevertheless, whenever I paint a room it looks, shall we say distinctly UNprofessional. I know that “practice makes perfect” and all that… but I’m a perfectionist at heart. So every little blot and blemish is like a dagger to my eyes. So, I have a few options… I could pay a professional to do it. Let them take over and carry me where I falter. That’s extremely tempting but I know it’s expensive and I know it won’t offer the same satisfaction as doing it myself… I could also just give up… But then I have to live with the same boring gray everywhere… and that’s really not an option. Or — and I think this is the solution I’m going with — I can find friends who are really good at painting, and paint alongside them, so that I can learn what makes them successful and do a better job myself. I can let them hold my hand through the difficult parts as I learn how to paint corners and clean lines… I can follow their brush strokes and model their techniques and learn how they do the parts I’m scared to do. And over time… maybe I won’t need them as much. Maybe eventually I’ll be able to paint the whole room by myself. That’s the goal, right? To be self-sufficient. That’s the journey I’m going on as a painter, but it’s also the journey I’ve started down as a trader. And many of you are on the same path. You want something better and more rewarding than just handing all your money over to somebody else and paying them to manage it… But you still want to be able to follow someone who knows what they’re doing. That’s what we’re here for. I don’t know if I’ll ever be a great painter. But I know we’re in the right spot to all reach our trading goals one day. And I’m glad to help be a tiny part of that.
