The Trump administration has given… TikTok’s US business a shocking $14 billion valuation. It’s a far cry from previous estimates that valued it at $40 billion. And yet China’s response so far has been complete silence. Why? Chinese state media has not made a comment yet – and social media was also absent of chatter of this major topic. One state-linked Weibo account quoted a Fudan University professor who called the deal a “win-win” for both sides. But that seems very far-fetched considering Trump’s valuation is almost three times lower than previous estimates. For now, all we have is a $14 billion deal and a wall of silence from Beijing. But silence in geopolitics usually means the story isn’t over. Ian Wyatt
