Chris "CJ" Johnson, Lead Host & Senior Analyst, Monument Traders Alliance Dear Reader, Silver was one of the hottest trades of 2025, far outpacing what many see as the #1 precious metals trade... gold. The iShares Silver Trust (SLV) shares are closing out 2025 with returns that are approaching 150% for the year. That more than doubles the returns that gold has put up over the same period of 65%. To put things further into perspective, Silver has outpaced the average returns of 20% for the Magnificent Seven and only four stocks in the Nasdaq 100 outperformed the "trader's metal" in 2025. The last week has seen an increase in volatility for silver as a breakdown in one of the most popular "store of value" trades is falling apart Bitcoin Entering a Bear Market Bitcoin is rounding out a disappointment of a year for investors. That's right, you read that correctly, you should be disappointed in the performance that Bitcoin is turning in for 2025. Sure, the "Store of Value" cryptocurrency hit all-time high prices just north of $125,000 in October. Sure, we saw the halving event that was suppose to kick off another 100% return for Bitcoin. And of course, sure... many of the large banks and even central banks are adopting Bitcoin as a strategy for their and their clients assets. But all of that is still resulting in Bitcoin finishing 2025 in a long-term bear market. Here's why. The last two months have seen Bitcoin drop as much as 36% since hitting that all-time high price of $125k. That alone marks a bear market from the standard definition. But it's the technical breakdown that should worry you the most. This week's lows in bitcoin have taken the cryptocurrency back below its 20-month moving average for the first time since the "coin" fell into a bear market in 2022. That move – coincidentally – also marked the beginning of a long-term bear market for stocks as the Nasdaq 100 notched losses of almost 30% following Bitcoin's bear market beginning. There are two things that should interest you about this... First, the fact that Bitcoin leads the stock market indices into long-term bear market trends is confirmation that Bitcoin IS NOT viewed by investors as a "store of assets". Instead, Bitcoin is still considered almost purely a speculative asset that has even more risk than stocks when trading trends turn. Second... because of that statement, a move further into a bear market trend for Bitcoin will result in a new wave of money moving into silver and gold as investors seek a true hedge against lower prices and volatility in the equity market. The "run" into gold and silver are in the early stages based on this outlook. What's Changed for Silver since 2022 That Makes this A Real 10X Opportunity? Silver Demand Is Surging Across the Board - Industrial demand is breaking records as solar, EVs, and grid infrastructure consume more silver. Solar PV alone is a silver vacuum and as we have seen, the clean energy movement is not disappearing.
- AI/data centers remain the stealth wildcard, driving demand for high-conductivity components - a quiet but growing tailwind.
- Investment flows are accelerating as silver becomes a leveraged bet on gold in risk-off, rate-cut, and dollar-debasement environments.
- Sovereign buying is emerging, led by Russia treating silver as a strategic reserve asset — not yet mainstream, but narrative fuel.
- Tight, inelastic supply sets up squeeze potential. Most silver is a byproduct metal. Deficits can persist, and forced liquidations hit fast when leverage unwinds.
This surge in demand is adding to the volatility and bullish trend in silver's price chart. I always profess that "volatility is a trader's best friend". Well, nowhere is this truer than in the market for silver. According to historical volatility figures, silver is trading at more than 7X the price volatility than gold. For long-term investors this can be maddening, but that volatility is truly what is driving the Fast, Aggressive and Right Directional (FAR) for silver that is attracting even more investment dollars. Details on Why NOW is the Time to Act on Silver This week's trading volatility in Silver has many investors thinking that it's time to sell or short the metal, here's why they are wrong. I've already gone through the fundamental drivers of the 2026 silver trade, let's look at the technicals... Silver's Trend Remains Strong & Friendly: Silver remains in a strong short- and intermediate-term bull market trend that investors should be participating in. Monday's 9% drop still maintained prices that are still more than 7% higher than the SLV's 20-day moving average. The silver ETF remains more than 30% above their bullish 50-day moving average. Buyers Are Rushing in to "Buy the Dip": Tuesday morning's response from investors confirms that the market is looking for ANY opportunity to grab the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) on a dip. This is the same activity that has been associated with strong trends in the Magnificent Seven stocks in the past. SLV Trading Volume Continues to Rise: Trading volume for the iShares Silver Trust is 250% higher than a year ago, confirming that investor interest and trading is growing more robust. My expectations are that we will see another 100% increase in trading volume as options traders are actively increasing call buying in the SLV option pits. This means that we are more likely to see this robust bullish trend continue through 2026 as uncertainty, volatility and fundamental strength drives silver prices higher. How to Trade Silver for 5X Returns in 2026 The first investment approach is simple. Don't go to Costco or your local coin shop, open your brokerage account app and consider the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) as a long-term trade for silver. You are not guaranteed to have silver delivered to you by holding the GLD shares. If you want to tuck an ingot or coins away in your safe or an old Hills Brothers coffee can buried in the back yard, the SLV shares are not for you. If you're interested in being able to liquidate your silver holding anytime that the market is open and have that cash available then the SLV may be the right way to hold silver. It's a simple buy and hold trade. Ignore the volatility and focus on the long-term trend, that's it. Current prices are $68.74 and my low-end target for the SLV shares for 2026 is $100. That's approximately 45% return from today's prices, but again.... That's my low-end. I see real potential for SLV shares to reach $150-$175 (160% gains) in the new year. As it looks right now, Silver is only in the fifth inning of a nine-inning game when it comes to the long-term trend. |
