On the Ground in the Middle East By Michael Salvatore, Editor, TradeSmith Daily When I went to schedule an interview with my friend and Freeport Alpha analyst Charles Sizemore this week, mainly to gab about the U.S. election and the sizeable volatility in store for markets, I didn’t expect an eight-hour time difference. Charles tends to split his time between Peru and Texas. This week, he was in Abu Dhabi – practically a stone’s throw from Iran, one side of the current Middle East conflict. That offers us a unique opportunity. What did the people he met in the United Arab Emirates expect for the U.S. election? Is there any sense of preference there? That’s just one of the insights Charles had to share from his visit to the UAE, where he attended the Alternative Investment Management Summit. There, as he showed in his interview, he got to hear from the likes of former House speaker Kevin McCarthy and former British PM Boris Johnson. And he came away with a fascinating perspective on what could happen for the next four years. Not only that, Charles showed me why the next two weeks could be some of the most volatile all year long. Not just because of seasonality, like we’ve observed here at TradeSmith. And not just because of the election itself, which could not be decided for days, if not weeks after election day. But because of the unusual circumstances we find ourselves with monetary policy, at a time where the inflation question still hangs in the air.
