276 stocks already broke

The S&P 500 closed the week near an all-time high. That's the headline, and it's true.

Here's what it hides, from the numbers I pulled Thursday night. 276 stocks in the S&P 500, about 55%, now trade below their 200-day average. A month ago, 70% were above it. On the 50-day it's worse. Three out of four names sit under it.

So what's holding the index up? Meta, Microsoft, AMD, Intel and Micron. Five stocks carry the whole thing.

Picture the trader who reads that headline, buys calls on "the market," and ends up long one of the 375 names already under their 50-day. The pick was fine.

What hurt him was skipping the one question that prices a mistake before you make it.
